A heavily trafficked south Boulder intersection soon will be gas station-less no longer.
Roughly four months after the two Conoco gas stations at the southwest and southeast corners of Table Mesa Drive and Broadway were razed, the construction process is under way on a fuel station at one of the sites.
King Soopers, the Colorado-based grocery division of Kroger Co., plans to open a five-pump fuel station at 600 S. Broadway, a site east of Broadway and near its Table Mesa grocery store.
If all goes as scheduled, the station should open by June, said Kelli McGannon, a King Soopers spokeswoman.
King Soopers and other grocers in recent years have expanded their presence in the gasoline retail business -- using the stations to bolster customer loyalty programs. The chain opened its first gas station in Boulder in 2011 at 3005 Arapahoe Ave., near its store at 30th Street and Arapahoe.
As work moves forward on the new King Soopers gas station, discussions remain ongoing for the neighboring former gas station lot at 601 S. Broadway, said Britt Augustine, a spokeswoman for W.W. Reynolds Co., the Boulder-based firm that owns both the 600 and 601 S. Broadway sites.
The planned use for the site remains a fuel station, she said.
"That (King Soopers) one worked out right away," she said of the deal, noting that timing was the primary reason why the grocer opted to open a station on the farther lot of the two.
It is unclear whether King Soopers remains in the mix for the second location. McGannon said she did not have any information about the southwestern site.
