BOULDER, Colo. -
Paper Bird is flying high.
The local band just released its new EP, A Sky Underground, landed a prime spot at the Mile High Music Festival and scored a gig at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Not bad for a young Colorado band.
Paper Bird has gained notoriety for its modern take on old-time music, but the band's ready to take its music to the next level.
"Our band has only been together for two years and things are going crazy," vocalist Genny Patterson said. "It's getting really exciting.
"We've been lucky to be part of the Denver music scene. The band's have been so supportive, and people in Denver always show up at our concerts."
Paper Bird, which plays at Twist & Shout in Denver on Friday, has been busy honing its music over the past two years and gaining a loyal following of Colorado fans. Patterson said the band's new music features a wider range of sounds.
"Our musical premise is old-timey music, but we've been trying out some new and different things," Patterson said. "The music's now sounding more natural and less complicated.
"We've also introduced a wider range of styles and influences. We have songs with jazzier undertones, some Gypsy circus music sounds -- and one song even has Mariachi sounds in it."
Paper Bird's new music is scoring the band A-list concert dates.
This summer, Paper Bird will play the Mile High Music Festival on July 19, and the group performs at Film on the Rocks on Aug. 18.
"We're so excited to play Mile High -- we can't believe it," Patterson said. "It's just incredible to see our names on the posters. Festivals are the easiest way to win fans, because it's a great way to play for lots of new people.
"This is an exciting opportunity to represent local bands."
Paper Bird plans to play lots of new tunes at the Mile High Music Festival.
"Our last CD is two years old, so we wanted to make a new record we could be proud of," Patterson said. "We're putting out an EP for now, and we'll have a full-length CD out in the fall.
"This record offers a wider range of styles and it shows off all the dynamics of this band."
Despite rumors of a name change, Paper Bird plans to keep its moniker.
The band toyed with changing its name because an Austrian musician had the same moniker.
No worries, Colorado's Paper Bird is here to stay.
"There has been some confusion, but we decided to stick with our name," Patterson said. "We'll figure it out."
The Audition
The Audition is one of Chicago's finest punk-pop outfits.
The band's touring behind its new self-titled CD and they're ready to rock the Fox Theatre. Saturday's show will feature the band's well-crafted lyrics and punchy pop tunes.
"Our sound just comes naturally," vocalist Danny Stevens said. "We try to throw a lot of different things into our songs. There's punk, some fast pop, R&B and country in the music.
"We try to put everything we love into our songs."
The Audition's worked its way up the ranks of indie-pop bands, and the group's toured with everyone from New Found Glory to Jack's Mannequin. The act's also been featured on the Warped Tour and played shows around the globe.
"We have a really sound work ethic," Stevens said. "We constantly play and we're always on the road. I think people appreciate it when we come around and play smaller venues."
The Audition also is wowing fans with its self-titled CD. Stevens said the band wanted the new music to speak for itself.
"We wanted to let people hear the music for themselves," Stevens said. "Then, people can make their own judgements.
"This is our third record, so we really wanted to hone our sound. I went through a lot of stuff when I was writing the lyrics for this record, and this record is really about finding yourself."
