With a fresh cover of snow, folks looking for places in town where they can Nordic ski, sled and tube, or ice-skate outdoors might consider some of these local selections:

NORDIC SKIING SPOTS

Area open-space trails are popular across the region, although none are cross-country tracks, per se.

North Boulder Park, tough to beat - volunteers from the Boulder Nordic Club have routinely groomed the track annually since 1987

Foothills Community Park - smaller, but still popular

Valmont City Park - A newer contender, with a groomed track this year

SLEDDERS & TUBERS

Boulder

Technically, sledding

is illegal in all city of Boulder parks, punishable by a fine, unless otherwise posted. There are only four officially sanctioned parks for sledding. They are:

Scott Carpenter Park, 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue.

Foothills Community Park, at 800 Cherry Drive, gentle hills.

Meadow Glen Park, east of 55th Street at Pennsylvania Avenue.

Harlow Platts Park, 1360 Gillaspie Drive in south Boulder.

Another favorite is the hill at Tantra Park, off Brookfield in south Boulder. And for a steeper run, there's always Casey Middle School

Lafayette

Slim pickings here.

Autumn Ash Park, 401 Lucerne Drive, features gentler "beginner" slopes.

Yarrow Park, east of 95th and Arapahoe, is another beginner spot.

Louisville

For short, "beginner" sledding, visit Cottonwood Park, South Boulder Road and Via Appia.

Louisville Recreation Center, 900 Via Appia Way, has a nice hill with slope variety.

For the more extreme, try the 16th hole at Coal Creek Golf Course behind Avista Hospital

Superior

Try the back side of the Rock Creek subdivision, west of the McCaslin Boulevard entrance.

Ward

Beware of sledding on the streets of Ward. It's been illegal since 1896, punishable by a fine of $5 to $100.
