Boulder police are investigating two burglaries on University Hill that could have compromised some local shoppers' personal and credit card information, said police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.
A manager for Jones General Store, 1370 College Ave., called police early Friday to report an overnight break-in and theft of credit card receipts. A short time later, at about 11:30 a.m., an owner of Root of the Hill, a business in the same building, called officers to report a break-in, theft and extensive vandalism, Huntley said.
Receipts and boxes of the business' tax documents were taken from Root, Huntley said. The vandals also set off fire extinguishers, burned two couches in the business and used spray paint to graffiti the floor, she said.
Police are not releasing information about what was written because it's part of the investigation, Huntley said. Detectives are investigating whether the suspects moved between Jones General Store and Root via a second entryway and stairwell that connects the two, she said.
Investigators found some of the Root tax documents over the weekend, although Huntley wouldn't say where officers found them because of the ongoing investigation. Officers are still looking for the missing credit card receipts, which could personal information from shoppers who visited the business during an unknown period of time.
"People should be aware that if they have shopped at Jones, they did have some receipts taken, and it's a good idea to be cognizant of activity on your credit card," Huntley said. "If people notice anything, in terms of their credit cards, please let the police department know."
Investigators don't have any suspects at this time.
