Braving the Saturday morning snow, a few dozen runners gathered at Centaurus High School in Lafayette to participate in a five-mile walk and run down the Coal Creek Trail to raise funds and awareness for domestic violence prevention.
The fundraiser was put together by Abby's Voice, a foundation established in July 2008 by Kathy and Chuck Robertson, in memory of their 21-year old daughter, Abigail Robertson, who was fatally stabbed in Denver on Dec. 11, 2007. Her ex-boyfriend, Marcus Hightower, was charged with murder and is awaiting trial.
Robertson, a Metropolitan State University student, was struggling to free herself of the abusive relationship just before her death.
"We're trying to raise date violence awareness because that's what killed my daughter," said Kathy Robertson. "We're also working to get a law passed that would require date and domestic violence education in schools."
Kathy Robertson has spent time in Washington, D.C., building support for the law, and plans to continue talking with legislators to have it passed. The Robertsons plan to use the money obtained by their foundation to provide funding for the curriculum.
"We don't want the burden to be on the taxpayer," said Chuck Robertson.
Saturday's run brought together several of Abigail Robertson's friends and family. The Lakewood City Commons' Buffalo Wild Wings, where she was an employee, also provided participants a lunch of spicy garlic, honey barbecue, mild and regular Buffalo wings.
"Abby was a very hard worker, caring and dependable," said Buffalo Wild Wings manager Tracy Troxel. "We've been supporting her since day one. I'm so glad I get to be a part of this."
Runners wore pins that read "It stops with me," referring to date and domestic violence. They were also sure to sip hot chocolate before embarking on the run, where temperatures were below freezing.
"I love running in the freezing cold," said Jim Glade, one of Abigail Robertson's friends. "I'm here to support her family, and I'm happy all of these people came out despite the weather."
