University of Colorado Chancellor Phil DiStefano and coach Dan Hawkins met earlier this week to discuss the football program and Hawkins' future with the school, CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said today.

Hilliard said no decision has been made about whether Hawkins will continue to coach the Buffs beyond this season and when that decision comes, it will be made by athletic director Mike Bohn after consulting with the DiStefano.

Denver television station KCNC (Channel 4) reported the chancellor and coach met, but it said that Hawkins came away from the meeting with the understanding that he is safe for another year.

"I would not characterize the outcome of that meeting that way," Hilliard said. "No one should read into

that that the chancellor will be making this decision. It is the athletic director's decision to make. The evaluation process is ongoing."

Bohn is in Hawaii this week with the men's basketball team at the Maui Invitational, which concludes today. He is scheduled to return to Boulder on Thursday morning.

Bohn said last week he would evaluate the coaching staff at the end of the season and that he had no timetable for making a decision about retaining or firing Hawkins, who has gone 16-32 in nearly four full seasons as coach in Boulder.

The Buffs will conclude the season Friday with the annual post-Thanksgiving rivalry game with Nebraska, which has already locked up the Big 12 North Division title and will play Texas next week in the conference championship game.
