Surveillance photo of a man attempting to steal an ATM in Gunbarrel (Boulder Police Department)

Boulder police believe a man used a stolen U-Haul truck to try to steal an ATM from the Chase Bank in Gunbarrel early Wednesday.

Surveillance photos from the bank show a man tying a chain to the back of a U-Haul, which was recovered a short distance away in the 6500 block of Gunpark Drive on Wednesday afternoon, according to Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.

Officers were called to the bank, at 6300 Gunpark Drive, at about 2 a.m. Wednesday after the ATM alarm sounded. When they arrived, Huntley said, police found the mangled ATM on its side on the bank lawn -- about 15 to 20 feet from where it had been ripped from its cement base.

Wires were sticking up from the ground where the ATM had been, and police found

a heavy chain wrapped around the machine. No money was taken from the ATM, and officers said no person witnessed the attempted theft.

Investigators recovered the U-Haul that they suspect was involved in the incident. It had been reported stolen in Boulder County. Officers are asking for the public's help identifying the suspect.
