Boulder Rock'n Moms, a 2,502-member online group for Boulder-area mothers, on Thursday established the 4 Mile Community Store -- a retail-like outlet offering gently used clothing, toys and other items to residents displaced by the Fourmile Fire.
The "store" is located in the Village Shopping Center, 2525 Arapahoe Ave., in the unit directly west of Boulder Ski Deals.
The impetus behind the 4 Mile Community Store was to provide a central location for the requests from Boulder Rock'n Moms' members to help others affected by the fire, said Lynne Fetterman, organizer of the group.
"This is a community thing," Fetterman said. "It needs to be a community recovery."
By Thursday morning, the discussions turned into reality. The 2,500-square-foot space donated through at least the end of the month by Gart Properties was filled with clothing racks provided by Just Between Friends' local site and a plethora of donations.
As she stood near the high-trafficked doorway, Fetterman motioned behind her to the dozen women sorting their gently used offerings.
"I don't even know any of these people," she said. "Well, until today."
The expectations are for the store to be open starting at 9 a.m. and into the afternoon. The goods will be available free of charge to people who are in the evacuation area of the Fourmile Fire, Fetterman said, adding that people need to bring some identifying information to obtain goods.
Gina Finney, a Boulder Rock'n Moms member, said she was enthusiastic about the effort. On Thursday, she dropped off 15 almost-new boys' pants.
Fetterman requests that the donations be "very gently used" and not stained or torn.
"These families have been through enough already," she said.
