The University of Colorado will host a groundbreaking ceremony Friday as it moves forward on a $63 million remodel and expansion of the Boulder campus's Recreation Center.
Students approved a fee increase to pay for the construction project, which will include an outdoor buffalo-shaped pool and added weight room and cardio space.
The ceremony will be at 4 p.m. on the pool patio and will include light refreshments and remarks by Chancellor Phil DiStefano and other campus and student leaders.
The event is free and open to the public. Student leaders initiated the renovation project, which will expand the Rec Center by about 30 percent and address nearly $25 million worth of deferred maintenance projects.
New features also will include an indoor turf gym, a renovated ice rink and a climbing gym and bouldering area.
Construction will take place through the fall of 2013, but the Rec Center will remain open.
