Famed Olympic speedskater Apolo Ohno is scheduled to visit the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art this morning for the unveiling of a shoe-themed statue titled "Sole of the Community."
The piece will comprise 200 shoes donated by Boulder-based Newton Running, which will inherit the statue after its run at BMOCA ends Aug. 8.
Ohno's appearance is slated for 11 a.m. today, when the official unveiling begins -- even though the statue will only be partially finished. The public is invited to help complete the statue, through both painting and shoe installation, between 6 and 8:30 p.m.
While in Boulder, Ohno, an eight-time Olympic medalist, also will meet with triathletes set to race in Sunday's Ironman. In about 10 weeks, Ohno himself will compete in the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
