ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Colorado men`s cross country team saw its streak of six straight regional titles end on Saturday at the University of New Mexico Golf Course, but it hardly mattered.

Jenny Barringer picked up another win in leading the CU women to their first regional crown since 2006, and the men`s team took second as both squads did what they needed to do to qualify for the Nov. 23 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

Barringer is the first CU woman to win a regional title since Renee Metivier did so in 2004.

She hung with the pack for the first 4 kilometers and then pulled away with 2K to go. She finished in 20 minutes, 29.0 seconds to beat BYU`s Cecily Lemmon by 12.1 seconds.

"It was really exciting," Barringer said. "I ran at this course in 2006 as a sophomore and I remember having a great team and coming in and taking second to Sally (Kipyego), and I feel like that was so long ago. So coming back here and being in a different position with an equally amazing team and this time pulling in the win was really fun."

The CU women finished with 48 team points as all five of their scorers finished in the top 19. Texas Tech was second with 53 points.

Allie McLaughlin took third for CU in 20:45.1. Freshman Laura Tremblay earned her first career top-10 finish by placing ninth. Emma Coburn was 16th and Laura Thweatt was 19th.

"They were patient and methodical, careful, and a couple of them had better days than we would have hoped for," CU coach Mark Wetmore said. "We knew we could run closer to Texas Tech than we did at the Big 12s, and it worked out well. We are very happy."

The CU men finished with 55 points as their top five all finished in the top 24. BYU won with 54 points.

CU senior Jordan Kyle took fourth in the 10K in 30:24.4. Junior Richard Medina took sixth and Christian Thompson was 10th to give the Buffs three racers in the top 10. Matt Tebo was 11th.

"What we needed here was to advance to the NCAAs and we got that so we are very happy," Wetmore said. "We came here perfectly willing to get fourth. A couple of guys maybe could have been stronger, but we didn`t even plan to try to win this race."
