Tad Boyle`s Buffs -- after a season-opening home game against Idaho State on Nov. 12 -- will travel to SEC country to face the Bulldogs in Athens on Nov. 16. Georgia`s football team visits Folsom Field on Oct. 2.
CU will play a total of six non-conference games outside the friendly confines of the Coors Events Center during Boyle`s first season on the bench.
"We`re not going to ease into the scheduling at all. I think the whole key with the non-conference schedule is to prepare yourself for what you`re going to face in the league," Boyle said during an interview with the Camera on Tuesday after releasing the 2010-11 men`s basketball schedule. "One of the things we`re going to have to learn to do is win on the road. We`re going to have some opportunities to do that in the preseason and gain some confidence going into league play."
The Buffs are coming off a 15-16 campaign in which they were 2-13 outside the Boulder city limits.
CU will also play in the Bay Area (at San Francisco on Nov. 20), in Boston (at Harvard on Nov. 28) and in the Las Vegas Classic (vs. New Mexico, Indiana or Northern Iowa on Dec. 22-23) during non-conference play.
"We want to recruit nationally," said Boyle, who hopes to sign at least three prominent high school seniors this November to replace Cory Higgins, Marcus Relphorde andpossibly Alec Burks a year from now. "We`re going to be on the West Coast twice, we`ll be down in the south, we`ll be on the East Coast, we`ll be in Las Vegas ... so we`re going to be in a lot of different parts of the country getting this basketball team some exposure. That`s going to help us with recruiting down the road."
A road victory over an SEC opponent (Georgia) and the potential Ivy League champion (Harvard) would probably be considered "quality wins" by the NCAA Tournament selection committee in March. The Buffs could also enhance their postseason resume by beating Oregon State (Dec. 4) in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series and in-state rival Colorado State (Dec. 8) in back-to-back home games.
"You want to test yourself in the non-conference," Boyle said. "Those games certainly will do that. ... The one thing we`re really going to stress to our team is every time we step on the floor we`ve got to be ready to play."
The opener against Idaho State at the Coors Events Center will be a doubleheader with the women`s team facing Regis. CU will also host CSU for a doubleheader.
The other home non-conference games are against Alcorn State (Nov. 23), Texas Pan-American (Nov. 30), The Citadel (Dec. 17), Longwood (Dec. 19) and Maryland-Eastern Shore (Dec. 29). Boyle plans to add one more non-conference game to the schedule to be played at the Coors Events Center.
The new staff has been recruiting the state of California heavily this summer, which is why the Buffs decided to play at Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 2 in the final tune-up before conference play.
CU opens up what could be its final Big 12 season at home against Missouri on Jan. 8. Kansas, Boyle`s alma mater, visits the Coors Events Center on Jan. 25.
"A lot of people always circle the Kansas game. With how close and exciting the game was last year, that`s a game certainly our fans get excited about. I know our players get excited about it," Boyle said of facing the Jayhawks. "But when you`re talking about the conference, they don`t give you two wins for beating Kansas. Just one. We have to take care of business every time we step out on the court."
The Buffs were able to establish a strong home court advantage during Jeff Bzdelik`s third season in Boulder with a 13-3 record at the Coors Events Center. CU upset Baylor and gave No. 1 KU an overtime scare during the run.
"I don`t care where you are, you have to take care of your home court," Boyle said. "Hopefully with the style of play we plan on playing -- getting up and down, playing a fast tempo game, and playing at altitude -- that home court should be a great advantage for us."
