Four or five University of Colorado students commit suicide each year, according to CU's suicide prevention coordinator, Amy Robertson.

A series of events to be held over the next two weeks will aim to highlight suicide awareness and intervention, beginning with a film screening Tuesday.

“The Truth About Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College” will be shown Tuesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in room 425 of the University Memorial Center. A group discussion will follow.

A mental health resource table with information on free counseling sessions and other programs will be set up outside the UMC on Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. Students can also learn how to recognize suicide warning signs and intervene early at a training session on the “Question, Persuade, Refer” technique on Thursday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in room 425 of the UMC.

A candlelight vigil, to be held Sept. 17, will cap the slate of events. Called “HOPE Lights the Night: Remembering and Honoring Those Lost to Us by Suicide,” it will take place at the Boulder Band Shell at Broadway and Canyon Boulevard at 7:30 p.m.
