A common complaint from many students is that there is no fashion curriculum at the University of Colorado.

Two CU journalism seniors believe that behind-the-curve Boulder is one place that could use a fashion nudge.

A facelift even, perhaps.

"Boulder fashion. Oh man," said senior Katie Corcoran. "Well, I think here people get caught in the winter trap -- always walking around in huge sweatpants and Uggs and huge sweatshirts."

Which is why Corcoran and senior Annie Walsh were ecstatic to stumble across an opportunity through an internship adviser to be style gurus at CollegeFashionista.com.

"I was like 'Yes, finally!'" said Walsh. "I've been waiting for this for four years. My goal is to be a fashion journalist, and you can't really learn that here at CU."

Indiana University graduate Amy Levin founded CollegeFashionista.com during her senior year. The site launched in August, and the CU portion just launched Oct. 4.

Levin, who's now in graduate school for fashion in Los Angeles, said she recruited style gurus from various schools to capture the different fashion trends across the nation.

"Readers have the opportunity to come to one site and see the looks of students their age and what they are wearing, how they make something unique," Levin said.

She said a goal in launching the site was to offer a spot for students to share different styles and trends.

"The cool thing about fashion is the individuality that comes with it," Levin said. "Gaining different people's perspectives allows readers to really see that side of the fashion world."

Beginning this week, the CU seniors will represent Boulder with blogs on the site. Various topics each day range from trends to advice to fashion news, local and national.

"Our goal ... is to inform CU about what the styles are here," said Corcoran, "and let students know where you can afford fashionable clothes on a college budget."

Both seniors hope to pursue fashion in the future.

Walsh started a fashion company in high school, has designed clothes for a boutique and was recently in Paris, the fashion capital, for six months.

"Ever since I was young, I was very into art and fashion, but my first love was writing," she said. "I was always searching for something that I could fuse both of these worlds together. Fashion journalism is the perfect way because you can put a lot of your own personality and style into what you're writing."

Corcoran, who works for Lola, 1203 13th St., on the Hill, said she hopes to write for a fashion magazine one day. She said she hopes to help the student body think fashion.

"I think you feel better about yourself when you're dressed nicely," Corcoran said. "I think maybe this site will motivate people to look nice, because after we graduate, we're all going to have to get dressed up every day."
