The average calorie count on a single turkey feast can easily top your caloric needs for an entire day. Got a plan to justify that extra pie? Here's a local rundown of ways to earn your turkey. (Or tofurkey.)
Run: If you run the CU @ Turley's Turkey Trot, you can work up an appetite and help Community Food Share. Rich Castro, president of Boulder Road Runners, said he hopes this year's Trot surpasses last year's.
"We gave them 22,000 meals last year," Castro said.
This year's course has been re-engineered so more people can run it, he said, plus parking is free and the entry fee is lower than most Thanksgiving Day runs. Castro said he doesn't want logistics to get in the way of raising money and collecting food for Community Food Share.
"I've tried to do everything I can to accommodate people, because we've seen no greater need than right now," he said.
10 a.m. at University of Colorado's Potts Field. $10 entry fee, $15 the day of the race. Volunteers and runners will receive a $6 gift certificate for Turley's restaurant; compete for gift certificates for Solepepper Sports, Boulder Running Company and more.
Salsa: The Avalon Ballroom hosts a salsa classes and dancing every Thursday night -- including Thanksgiving.
One-hour dance classes (three levels of classes) start at 7:30 p.m., open dancing from 8:30 to 10:30; $8 for both. Avalon Ballroom, 6185 Arapahoe Ave. villageartscoalition.org
Ski/ride: Most of Colorado's ski resorts will be open by Thanksgiving Day. Rob Linde, spokesman for Eldora Mountain Resort, says at Boulder County's only ski resort "there's a strong charge in the morning" on Thanksgiving Day.
Linde said a lot of cross-country skiers come out the day after Thanksgiving, if the Nordic trails are open. This year, Eldora hopes to have them open in time, but check eldora.com before you go.
Holiday lift hours at Eldora: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Ice skate: Holidays are busy at the ice rink at One Boulder Plaza, says Cindi Indermill, manager.
"Last year we had about 100 or 125 people come and skate" on Thanksgiving, she said.
The outdoor rink at One Boulder Plaza is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. $6 adults, $5 seniors, $4 children (ages 4 to 12), children 3 and under free; $3 skate rental.
Hike: Steve Mertz, outreach coordinator for City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, often hikes at Chautauqua on Thanksgiving Day and says a lot of families are out in the morning.
"It's nice to get everyone involved," he says, "so take the cook."
Yoga: Every Thanksgiving, OM Time's Boulder studio offers an all- levels yoga class, and it's always a hit, says OM Time owner Shannon Paige Schneider.
"We work hard and play hard," she said.
Paige Schneider likes to bring a surprise for everyone, plus good tunes and snacks. But you'll still burn calories.
"They will sweat like it is their job and they don't want to get fired!" Paige Schneider said. "And I always say they can have an extra piece of pie or extra whipped cream at the end of class."
OM Time's Grace and Gratitude class is at 9 a.m. Both Boulder locations of CorePower Yoga have classes on Thanksgiving Day, as does the Yoga Pod. Studio Be Yoga and Boulder Yoga have morning classes.
Cycling: The Boulder Cycling Club is putting on its first annual Turkey Trot ride this year, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Amante in North Boulder (4580 Broadway). The ride is for road cyclists who can average 15 mph on the flats and goes to Hygiene and back, about 30 miles round trip; bouldercyclingclub.com.
Gym: Thanksgiving morning at RallySport Health and Fitness is like a big party, said Dillon Johnson, Rally's director of golf and customer service.
"It's so much fun, the whole places is full of smiling, laughing people," he said.
The fitness club has multiple calorie-burning class offerings Thanksgiving morning, including cycling, yoga, sculpt and power. Johnson said the instructors usually put together new music and make it a little special.
RallySport is open from 5 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Several other Boulder health clubs are open for part of the day, too. City of Boulder recreation centers are closed.
Ultimate: Local Frisbee organization Grass Roots Ultimate puts on a pick-up game dubbed the Turkey Bowl every Thanksgiving morning.
