University of Colorado Chancellor Phil DiStefano on Monday named Russell L. Moore interim provost of the Boulder campus.

The appointment begins July 1.

Moore has served as interim vice chancellor for research since May 2009. He replaced Stein Sture, who agreed to serve as interim provost but will now return to the vice chancellor for research job.

"I am pleased to announce that we have a seasoned and respected campus leader in Russ Moore to serve as interim provost," DiStefano said in a news release. "Russ has a distinguished career as a researcher, teacher and contributor to the CU-Boulder community, and is known for his fair-minded approach to problem solving and management. He will provide steady leadership for our academic enterprise as we evaluate our options in filling the provost position permanently."

The university had chosen Robert Sternberg — a psychologist and dean at Tufts University — as its sole finalist for the permanent provost position. But Sternberg withdrew his name and has since been named provost and senior vice president at Oklahoma State University.

The search for a permanent provost has been indefinitely suspended.
