A 19-year-old climber who fell an estimated 80 to 120 feet from a rock formation in Eldorado Canyon State Park on Wednesday is in critical but stable condition, officials say.

Ian Johnson, of Monument, was climbing an unknown route on the Wind Tower rock formation when he fell at about 7:40 p.m., according to Sgt. Dave Booton of the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Rescue crews were able to carry Johnson to a nearby fire station where he was airlifted to St. Anthony hospital in Lakewood.

Hospital spokeswoman Sharon Burnette confirmed Thursday that Johnson was in the hospital's intensive care unit in "critical but stable" condition.

Booton said hospital officials told him Johnson underwent surgery Thursday but was "doing good."

Johnson was climbing with fellow University of Wyoming student Maxwell Chandler, 19, of Littleton, when the accident occurred, Booton said.

The two were using technical climbing gear, and investigators are still working to determine what led to Johnson's fall. Booton indicated the fall may have been the result of some miscommunication between the two climbing partners but emphasized it has been determined the incident was accidental.
