The University of Colorado's spring commencement ceremony is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday at Folsom Field, and campus officials are warning attendees to arrive early, both because of anticipated heavy traffic on U.S. 36 and new security screenings at the stadium.

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, only soft-sided bags or containers no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches -- the size of small purses and backpacks -- will be allowed in Folsom, and there will be bag searches at all entry points into the stadium.

At Friday's ceremony, CU will award 6,084 degrees, including 4,687 bachelor's degrees, 903 master's degrees, 171 law degrees and 494 doctoral degrees.

Academy Award-winning actress Julie Andrews, who starred in "The Sound of Music," "Mary Poppins" and "The Princess Diaries," will deliver the commencement address.

In the event of heavy rain or snow, an abbreviated ceremony will be held, CU officials said.

City and campus roads may be congested for about 1 1/2 hours before the ceremony and about an hour afterward, according to university officials.
