University of Colorado Regent Joe Neguse, a Democrat who represents the 2nd Congressional District, will formally announce his candidacy for Colorado secretary of state at a press conference Tuesday.
Neguse, should he earn the Democratic nod, would challenge Republican incumbent Scott Gessler in the November 2014 election.
Neguse, who lives in Broomfield, is a CU graduate who served as student body president on the Boulder campus before earning his law degree from the university in 2009.
His six-year term as regent ends in January 2015.
Neguse will be joined at the Tuesday afternoon press conference by former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, Lt. Governor Joe Garcia, Mayor Michael Hancock and former Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff, as well as several Democratic state legislators.
Neguse is an attorney at the Holland & Hart law firm in Denver. He is one of the youngest public officials in the state and was presented the “Rising Star Award” by the Colorado Democratic Party in 2010.
