GREELEY, Colo.—University of Northern Colorado athletic director Jay Hinrichs has resigned after nearly nine years at the helm of the university's programs.

University president Kay Norton said Tuesday that she would serve as interim athletic director until a new director is hired.

According to the Greeley Tribune ( http://tinyurl.com/ldc3ezf), neither the Norton nor Hinrichs would give the reasons behind the resignation.

Hinrichs led the Bears through the transition to Division I membership when he was hired in 2004. He secured membership in the Big Sky Conference for 14 sports programs as well as membership in the Western Wrestling Conference for wrestling and most recently membership in the Western Athletic Conference for baseball and swimming.

The university says Hinrichs' annual salary was $125,000.
