When Japango Sushi Restaurant marks its 15th anniversary later this year, the downtown Boulder sushi spot will do so with larger quarters.

Japango, 1136 Pearl St., is expanding into a neighboring retail space formerly occupied by Potala Imports, according to building permits recently approved by the city of Boulder. The sushi restaurant also will be adding an outdoor patio on the bricks of the Pearl Street Mall, said owner Jon Banis.

"We've been looking at (the former Potala Imports space) for quite some time, and getting a patio out on Pearl Street has always been a vision for our overall long-term position here in Boulder," Banis said.

The expansion will add 1,300 square feet, a more than 50 percent increase to Japango's current space, Banis said.

The construction work, which also will include a remodel of Japango's existing space, could wrap up by the end of September.

The restaurant remains open, but may have to close for a short period of time as some stages of work -- including the demolition of shared walls -- move forward, Banis said.

"(Business) has been good; the last couple of years we've definitely been going in the right direction," he said. "Obviously we're sure going ahead with this project."
