A Pueblo man charged with attempted murder in an assault that left a former University of Colorado student with severe head injuries last September entered a plea of not guilty Friday morning.

A trial for Kory Thomas White, 23, was scheduled to begin Sept. 20.

White faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and first-degree burglary in the Sept. 7 attack on University Hill that sent 24-year-old Donald McKillop-Lopez to the hospital in critical condition.

One of White's lawyers, Mark Johnson, told Boulder District Judge Maria Berkenkotter that he expected the trial to last two weeks.

A witness told police she saw White throw a large object at McKillop-Lopez's head and again at his body once he was on the ground, according to an arrest affidavit.

The document quoted witnesses saying that White was jealous that his on-again, off-again girlfriend had shown an interest in McKillop-Lopez.

McKillop-Lopez was in the hospital for a couple of weeks following the incident. Boulder prosecutor Tim Johnson said he is still recovering from a brain injury.
