Students at the University of Colorado will have some options during this semester's student government elections with 39 contenders vying for 17 positions, a contrast from last spring's 14 candidates uncontested in every seat for the first time in 20 years.
Over the past few years, candidates and voter turnout has hit extreme lows, including last spring's election, which turned out only 17 percent of eligible student voters. It marked the lowest showing in eight years.
But the University of Colorado Student Union may be seeing a change of heart in students who once ignored elections and seemed apathetic to the administration, as this semester's ballots will come close to the record competition in 2002 with 52 candidates. The early interest may be an indication of record voter turnouts and an end to the election drought, according to UCSU students.
The following students will be listed on the UCSU, University of Colorado Engineering Council and Arts and Sciences Student Government ballot, with online voting beginning April 5 through 9 at vote.colorado.edu:
