Three Boulder County-based craft breweries took home medals recently at The European Beer Star Awards, one of the most recognized beer competitions in the world.

Longmont-based Left Hand Brewing Co. took home a gold medal in the sweet stout category.

The competition is limited to beer categories that originated in Europe.

Longmont-based Oskar Blues' Dale's Pale Ale was awarded a silver medal in the English-style pale ale category, and its Mama's Little Yella Pils won a bronze in the Bohemian-style pilsner category.

Boulder-based Twisted Pine took home a bronze medal for its Northstar Imperial Porter in the Baltic-style porter category.

In all, 21 American craft breweries -- all members of the Boulder-based Brewers Association's Export Development Program -- won 25 awards in 22 different categories in the 2012 Beer Star awards. The winners were announced last week at Brau Beviale, the European trade fair for the beverage industry, which took place in Nuremberg, Germany.
