In another move toward becoming a Boulder music hub, eTown Hall might become home to a weekly open mic, hosted by local musician Silent Bear.

This Monday will serve as a trial run, with music from 6:45 to 9 p.m. and no cover in eTown Hall's cafe area, the Bohemian Room. If all goes well, Silent Bear hopes to keep it up weekly or bi-weekly.

The singer/songwriter has a track record of successful open mics in Boulder. In 1994, he co-hosted Boulder's now-defunct Penny Lane open mic. He left town for a few years, but when he returned in 2004, he hosted open mics at the Guitar Cellar, the shuttered Cafe Babu and Johnny's Cigar Bar.

"In the past, we've featured great local talent -- singer/songwriters, sometimes poets," Silent Bear said. "It's good to do these kind of events with regularity so you get a lot of regulars coming in to play."

He has plenty of connections and friendships in the Boulder music community and expects at least a few of them to come by this Monday. The beauty of it, other than the exposure, he said, is that musicians can network, learn from one another or gain inspiration. That kind of event fits well into eTown's goals to make eTown Hall a go-to spot in the music community.

"eTown, the way they expose music to the county, I thought it would be a good place," Silent Bear said. "We're trying to develop a community and give me a venue, an open space and also to network and communicate."
