Police arrested a 28-year-old man after witnesses said he smashed a fellow bar patron with a bottle at the Walrus in downtown Boulder over the weekend.

Gary Michael Murphy, of Boulder, was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of first-degree assault, according to a police report.

The report said police were called to the Walrus, 1911 11th St., at 1:40 a.m. Sunday. When police arrived on the scene, they found Julien Floro, 21, outside the bar, bleeding heavily from the face and neck with his shirt covered in blood. Floro told officers a man inside the bar had hit him in the face with a bottle.

Inside the bar, bouncers had detained Murphy and identified him as the one who hit Floro.

Witnesses told police that Floro had been dancing with a group of friends inside the bar when he bumped into Murphy. The witnesses said Murphy became upset and began threatening Floro, who apologized, then turned his back to Murphy.

Several minutes later, witnesses said, Murphy smashed a bottle over Floro's head without provocation, at which point a fight ensued and everyone was kicked out of the bar.

When asked about the incident, Murphy -- who officers noted in the report was intoxicated -- said he remembered bumping into Floro and said there was some pushing and shoving. When asked if he hit anyone with a bottle, Murphy replied, "I'm not saying I did or I didn't, but I did have a glass in my hand," and added, "He was bigger than me, so I defended myself."

Floro suffered several cuts to his face that required a total of 19 stitches.

Police found blood on the floor of the bar, but officers said the floor of the Walrus was "literally covered in beer bottles" and were unable to find any bottles that may have been used in the alleged assault.

Murphy was booked into the Boulder County Jail on Sunday and released Monday on bond. He is due for a formal filing of charges today.

Boulder police have not yet made Murphy's booking photo available.
