The city of Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks Department closed an area near Mount Sanitas to the public today to protect nesting prairie falcons.

The closure is in an area south of the East Ridge Trail and east of the Mount Sanitas Trail. The closure will not affect any designated trails.

The area will be re-opened if monitoring indicates the nesting does not take place.

Trespassing violations carry a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
