The Boulder County Coroner's Office has identified the man who reportedly shot himself in front of a deputy and an open space ranger last week as Thomas Schoderbek, 20, of Bend, Ore.
The University of Colorado Boulder confirmed Thursday that Schoderbek was a student at the university. According to his page, he was an undergraduate research assistant in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and was expected to graduate in 2021.
According to a release, Boulder County Sheriff's Office deputies were sent to do a welfare check on Schoderbek at the Meyers Gulch Trail Head, 7250 Flagstaff Road, at 7:30 p.m. April 2.
They were able to locate Schoderbek at the Meyers Gulch Trail Head parking lot. But shortly after initial contact, Schoderbek reportedly shot himself in the head in front of a deputy and Boulder County Open Space ranger in an apparent suicide.
Boulder County Sheriff's Office detectives and investigators with the Boulder County Coroner's Office responded to the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
The Boulder County Coroner's Office will conduct an investigation to determine the official cause and manner of death.
