Fyleaf, Skillet and Paramore will be adding a rocking edge to local venues this week.
All three bands have created a music-business buzz by adding new dimensions to the hard and alt-rock worlds. Fans are loving the fusion of edgier and melodic sounds, and they're packing venues to see these bands play live.
Flyleaf
Flyleaf's been wowing audiences with its lush rock sounds and straight-ahead vocals powered by singer Lacey Mosley.
Who: Flyleaf, with Paper Tongues
When: 9 p.m. Saturday
Where: Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder
Cost: $25
Saturday, Flyleaf's geared up to headline the Fox Theatre. This is the buzz concert of the week, so don't miss this theatrical rock show.
The Texas band's also getting ready to release its new CD, Memento Mori, and audiences are ready to get a second dose of the group's alt-metal sounds.
"We all grew up in Texas, and we were influenced by bands like Metallica and Megadeth," guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya said. "We wanted to be an intense, heavy band, but we also wanted to have a melodic, fragile and vulnerable feel to the music.
"We create a very atmospheric sound with the guitars. This music really breathes, but it's also transparent."
The Flyleaf members are all Christians and they let their
faith subtlety seep into the lyrics."We write about everything in life that's amazing and intense," Bhattacharya said. "We stress real issues in our songs, but the songs are really hopeful."
Flyleaf's messages may be subtle, but this band plans to rock the Fox.
"Our shows are very energetic and there's lots of intensity within the context of the songs," Bhattacharya said. "Our whole set list tells a complete story and it evokes a certain feeling at the shows."
Skillet and Paramore
Skillet and Paramore will be rocking out Denver this week, and both of these bands know how to weave metal and melodic riffs to perfection.
Skillet's a Tennessee band that can whip out everything from symphonic to industrial rock tunes. The group will be hitting the Paramount Theatre on Saturday, showing off tunes from its latest CD, Awake.
"We play hard rock, but it's very melodic," bandleader John Cooper said. "We really focus on using melodic and symphonic elements in our songs. There are lots of dynamics in our music.
"We've really been blazing some new trails and breaking into new markets. Our CD, Awake, really broke out and things have been going crazy. No one expected it -- and now our music's used on everything from college football shows to MTV2."
Paramore had to re-schedule its Denver show, but the make-up concert's set for Sunday at the Fillmore Auditorium.
This is the band that kicked off the melodic, hard rock movement and nothing tops a Paramore concert.
Saul Williams
Saul Williams is a musician, performer and poet. The artist is always thinking up new ways to re-invent his art and he has a special show planned for Boulder.
Sunday, Afro-Punk featuring Saul Williams hits the Fox. The concert also features sets by Earl Greyhound and American Fangs.
"I've been really busy making my new album," Williams said. "I moved to Paris to record there. I've also been busy touring and traveling, and I've been working on some new book and film projects."
The Afro-Punk show is William's latest touring project and the artist's proud to bring the event to Boulder.
"I created Afro-Punk to be a safe haven for kids who grew up in urban areas and were ostracized for being different," Williams said. "I wanted these kids to know they weren't alone and that there was alternative kinds of music out there."
