The Demon Funkies and P-Nuckle are holding a farewell-to-2009 show at Denver's Bluebird Theater on Thursday. This concert marks a successful year for both these local bands.
The Demon Funkies have been making a name for themselves in the local market, and the group's psyched to show off its new lineup and material for the Denver crowd.
Ryan Chrys is the Demon Funkies' guitarist/vocalist, and he was ready to let Colorado Daily readers know about the band's music and career.
Who: Demon Funkies, with P-Nuckle, Biscuitland and the Chris Webb Band
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: Bluebird Theater, 3317 E. Colfax St., Denver
Cost: $10
Q: How does your band fuse funk and rock elements into the mix?
A: Demon Funkies are a one-stop shop. Because we've been playing together for awhile, we've got a pretty big catalogue of original material. We mix up rock, funk, jazz, pop and even a bit of country.
Our mission, from the start, was to be able to play to any kind of audience. When we do our showcase material though, it's mostly rock 'n' roll.
Q: What makes the Demon Funkies unique?
A: I see loads of local bands, but the majority are missing the "edge factor." To us, there's more to a live
band than just perfectly played music. When it's show time, we throw down hard like it's a stadium rock show. Oftentimes it can veer out of control, but the show excels.
Music should be great to listen to, but a live show should be memorable, entertaining and a visual event as well.
Q: What happens at a Demon Funkies show?
A: We usually dance in the audience, do crazy solo stuff -- and I often throw stickers and Snickers out.
We do well at being in tune with the people and playing to their responses. Sometimes we'll write a song the day of the show and perform it as a special gift for the occasion.
For example, we wrote a song for Casper, Wyo., while we were playing there. Now we only play it when we're back in their town.
Q: Describe your 2008 CD Punk Junkies.
A: Punk Junkies is unique, in that it's a collection of our harder-edge rock songs.
Sonically, it's amazing. Lyrically, it's a fun ride -- there's stories about crazy characters and events that we all relate to.
This CD definitely represents a lot of our rock energy.
Q: Why was 2009 a good year for the band?
A: We won Westword's music award for Best Funk Band and we got picked up by a booking agent. Both things are huge for us.
We've also done a bunch of great gigs and summer festivals, and everything keeps getting better. We're going to cut a new CD this winter, and when we're finished we'll seek some label feedback.
Q: Why should fans check out tonight's show?
A: It will be legendary! Its going to be an amazing night of some top Colorado bands.
P.S. I'm bringing my trampoline on stage for a little extra lift!
