The Congress has been on the road for a while now. This weekend will be their Denver homecoming celebration, after a string of sold-out shows with Lake Street Dive. They're playing the Bluebird Theater, and keyboardist Chris Speasmaker said, "We're really excited to share our new tunes with Colorado."
We had some more questions for Speasmaker about what the rock quartet has been up to in the past 18 months, and about what's coming next. Check it out.
You just got back from the tour with Lake Street Dive. How was that?
It was amazing. It was an incredible experience. The entire tour was sold out. They were 500-1,000-cap rooms, all of them sold out, including the legendary Troubadour in L.A. People came out and came early for us, and it's a really good feeling to play to an audience that size.
It's been a while since the last record. Have you been working on anything new?
Our last recording, we put out that soul EP, and that was a year and a half ago. Over the past year and a half, we've been touring and playing locally. We've actually been writing a lot of new stuff and we're gonna debut a lot of these new songs this weekend ...
Jonathan had his baby girl in January. We put a hold on touring, but now she's out and healthy and we're gonna get back on the road, and I'm sure we're gonna get back in the studio and get a new album out.
Can you give me a sense of what the new music is like? You must have been trying new things in the past year and a half.
Scott has been on a tear. He's just been writing and writing and writing. He kind of writes songs in a country or bluesy kind of way. He writes on the guitar and sings, then he brings them to the band and we like to make them danceable. We give our input and it really ends up adapting to make the sound more conducive to the live shows. We've been playing five of his new songs and I think we're gonna be bringing up one of Jonathan's old songs from his old band and we've been writing and writing and writing.
Anything else coming up?
Nothing is locked in right now. I think we're going to try to go back and hit the markets we did with Lake Street Dive, places we haven't been in a long time. Go back to some of those areas and give them a full show ... Now that we've played there to a sold out crowd, we'll try to go back and give 'em a full show. I think our next move is to get back in the studio and I think that should be this summer.
