Here we are again. Record Store Day.

As I've said before, I'm not a fan of rampant consumerism. I don't like waiting in line to buy things. However, I do like giving my money to local stores, particularly record stores. I also like exciting additions to my vinyl collection, and damn are there some excellent offerings this year.

Here are the records I'd buy if I actually had any money. Buy them in my honor.

LCD Soundsystem

The Long Goodbye (LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden)

3,000 copies, 5-by-12 inch vinyl

Perhaps you've seen "Shut Up and Play the Hits," the documentary of LCD Soundsystem's farewell concert. This is different. Frontman James Murphy mixed the entire thing himself, and it's completely different from the sound in the film because, he says, the different format demands a different feel. Knowing Murphy, every detail has been obsessed over and this is going to sound brilliant.

Outkast

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik

4,000 copies, 12-inch vinyl

In a move that surprises no one, Outkast is reissuing its 1994 debut album amidst the enormous reunion tour. Did you miss Outkast? Well, say Andre 3000 and Big Boi, here is an outrageous helping of Outkast. Once this spree is over, though, who knows if and when we'll get more. Snatch up this limited classic while you can.

Dinosaur Jr.

Visitors

5,000 copies, 5-by-7 inch vinyl

Ah, the allure of art-filled box sets. So hard to resist dropping entirely too much money when you can get Dinosaur Jr.'s first four singles and the band's covers of the Byrds' "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" and Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way." It also comes with art from Dinosaur Jr. collaborator Maura Jasper, including a book of unused art from the late '80s.

Surfer Blood

Pythons Demos

1,000 copies, 12-inch vinyl

Surfer Blood's second record was not as well received as it's first, but then again, it wasn't bad. It was good, and the demos might be better. I'm very curious to hear the unpolished versions of these songs.

Tame Impala

Live Versions

5,000 copies, vinyl

So, yes, this is a live record. The songs, recorded at a show in Chicago, were chosen to offer something different from the studio recordings, beyond just being live performances. Here are the tracks: "Endors Toi," "Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind," "Sestri Levante," "Mind Mischief," "Desire Be Desire Go," "Half Full Glass," "Be Above It" and (scream it) "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards."

Sky Ferreira

Night Time, My Time

800 copies, 12-inch picture disc

OK, this isn't about boobs, but it kind of is. Sky Ferreira's debut LP is very good — beautiful, sad, glam-pop. It's worth buying no matter what. Then again, she wouldn't put her breasts on a picture disc if she didn't find the idea as amusing as you might. This is more about fun than objectification.
