Hey everybody, just got in from my trip to Istanbul last night and I feel like a sack of pudding from all the jetlag so hopefully this column is legible. Fortunately though, we have a ton of badass, summery new releases going into rotation this week, so listen in for these highlights:
Taylor McFerrin is a mainstay of Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and his debut release Early Riser proves his prowess as a beatmaker. Incorporating the cosmic jazz vibes of Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane into his old-school hip-hop mentality, Early Riser is the kind of supremely chilled-out music that's just made for summertime.
Toronto's BADBADNOTGOOD have returned with another collection of excellent, menacing jazz entitled III, showcasing once again the trio's eclectic mix of electronica and post-bop. Laden with deep, dark and fuzzy keyboards and Alexander Sowinski's airtight drums, it's no wonder the group frequently remixes the likes of Madlib, Danny Brown and Earl Sweatshirt.
Parquet Courts made a splash last year with their terrific Light Up Gold release, and their third album, Sunbathing Animal, might just be even better. The group is as cunning as ever with their airtight style of post-punk, but Sunbathing Animal takes a more easygoing approach than their previous work, with several songs that stretch past the 6-minute mark and allow the group to steadily build their guitar clatter to gnarly and beautiful effect. Fans of their last album and curious newcomers alike should all find something to love here.
