CU's Carlisle defends herself against conflict-of-interest accusations

State senate candidate posts response on campaign site

Friday, July 25, 2008

Cindy Carlisle -- a Democratic candidate running for Boulder's state senate seat in a heated primary -- is defending herself against allegations that she was unfit as a University of Colorado regent because she had a conflict of interest during her service.

Critics, and her Democratic rival Rollie Heath, have said Carlisle was unfit to serve as a regent because her attorney husband represented an alleged rape victim suing the school. In December, CU announced a $2.85 million settlement deal with two alleged rape victims. Lisa Simpson, who was represented by Carlisle's husband, Baine Kerr, and took the lead in the case, received $2.5 million from CU while the other plaintiff was paid $350,000.

Carlisle has posted a response to the allegations on her campaign Web site at www.cindycarlisle.com, where she refers to the allegations as "reckless."

Carlisle, who recused herself as a regent on matters directly surrounding the lawsuit, said she hired a personal ethics attorney to make sure she acted ethically without diminishing her effectiveness on the board. She said, as a regent, she could participate in other matters, including women's safety and athletic reforms.

And, when the Daily has time, would it print Heath's answer to Baine Kerr's requests as below? Heath DID reply, didn't he? Been a week. Would be highly suspcious and sleazy if he did not, right?

"....Last night you told the debate audience that Cindy's financial disclosure identifies Kerr Interests as a source of income, which you said was Kerr-McGee, an oil company. That was a untrue, as Cindy explained. Now your e-mail compounds the falsehood by saying you meant Pennzoil. Kerr Interests has nothing to do with Pennzoil. Neither Cindy nor I receive any income from Pennzoil, and we have no ownership interests in the company--not a share. So you need to correct your e-mail, but that's not all that needs correcting.

Last night you also said your financial disclosure was true and complete. But it omits as "sources of income" all your compensation and stock awards from Allied Motion Technologies, IMA Financial, and other corporate boards. (It notes later your memberships on boards but nowhere discloses that you receive significant income from them.) Also, you told the debate audience you have had no contact with anyone at CACI for ten years. But you served on CACI's board during 1998-2002--four of the last ten years..."
