POWER
Scooters: Most popular models average a top speed of 40-45 miles an hour with 4 horsepower
Motorcycles: Top speeds often exceed 100 mph with a minimum of 15 horsepower
GAS MILAGE
Scooters: 50cc models average between 100-125 miles per gallon which taper down according to cc level increase.
Motorcycles: Average between 40-50 miles per gallon depending on make, model, and how they are driven.
COST OF MAINTENANCE
Scooters: Smaller parts and simple design keep maintenance and cost to minimum
Motorcycles: Intricate components and more complex machinery make motorcycles more expensive to fix, but not necessarily less reliable.
CROSSOVER COST:
Scooters: Under 50cc requires driver’s license, over 50cc requires motorcycle permit; insurance optional.
Motorcycles: Motorcycle lisence required; insurance required and more expensive than scooter insurance.

This is a good article about scooters and motorcycles. Motorcycles are popular in America because of their image and their faster speeds. However, scooters will continue to become more and more popular as our cities grow and gas prices continue to rise.
