CU housing gets a tune up

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Residence halls on the CU campus will be receiving repairs and improvements during the summer months with renovation and maintenance planned through August and beyond.

While much of the work is maintenance and repairs done each summer, there are also extensive renovations being done to somestudent housing.

"We're doing both," said Curt Huetson, director of facilities planning and operations with Housing and Dining Services. "There's always repair work to be done. We also do renovation work."

Some of the more extensive work includes the Residential Annual Modernization Program, or RAMP, at Sewall Hall. This renovation work will involve repainting the interior of the building, installing new electronic locks, furniture and floor materials and renovation of all community bathrooms.

All residence hall bathrooms are slated for extensive renovations and modernization, but the Sewall project is ongoing with a scope of 10 years, according to a statement from Housing and Dining Services.

While much of the work is expected to conclude in August, just ahead of incoming students, some of the work will take longer.

The renovation work at Andrews Hall is expected to continue beyond the summer months due to the extensive work being done there, and will not be open to students in the fall, according to Huetson.

"Everything's new," Huetson said.

Arnett Hall in the Kittredge complex received renovation work as well, but will be open to students in the fall.

Another project that will not see completion by the end of the summer months are new hall director apartments that will replace some of the residential rooms at Libby, Sewall and Baker Halls. The inclusion of these rooms is part of a "national trend," Huetson said.

"These will probably be done in between semesters," Huetson said.

Some of the work being done to residence halls is maintenance and repair, such as the electrical upgrades and replacement at Baker Hall. The west plaza of Farrand Hall is also slated for repair, with the objective eventually being to renovate the west Farrand plaza staircase.

Other replacements include more energy efficient fan coil units in the rooms of Darley Towers north.

Most of the renovation work being done over the summer is on the inside of the buildings, but Sewall Hall will be receiving landscape and turf improvements in addition to its extensive internal renovation.
