HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING

The Boulder County/City of Boulder Office of Emergency Management will present and explain Boulder County's planning process for eliminating or reducing the effects of various hazards during a public meeting at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, at Longmont Fire Station 3, 1000 Pace St., Longmont.

Residents, elected officials, emergency responders and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to present and discuss the County's approach to hazard mitigation planning. The Boulder County Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee was created to steer the process and consists of representatives from County departments, incorporated municipalities, and school and fire districts. The initial draft of the Boulder County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan identifies and profiles the natural hazards to which the county is vulnerable; quantitatively assesses the vulnerability of the more significant hazards (e.g., flood and wildfire); and includes goals and actions intended to mitigate the effects of these hazards.

Public comment on these aspects of the plan is being sought at this meeting. This will be the first of two public meetings on the plan; a second public meeting will be scheduled later this summer.

For more information, contact Merrie Harper at the Boulder Office of Emergency Management, 303-441-3390, or mharper@bouldercounty.org.
