TRACK AND FIELD
The University of Colorado honored two seniors Monday as the school's Athletes of the Week for April 28-May 4. Distance runner Brent Vaughn and combined events athlete Chelsea Haverty were selected for their accomplishments with the CU track & field team where Vaughn recently set a new CU school record and Haverty notched a new personel record.
The award was the first for Haverty's career after she took third in the 200-meters (25.30) and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (14.89) at the Front Range Classic in Laramie, Wyo. For Haverty, from Green Valley, Calif., the 100-meter time was a new personel record.
Vaughn has grown used to the accolades as this was the sixth CU Athlete of the Week award in his career, and the third this season, tying him for tenth all-time time in career athlete of the week honors.
Vaughn, an Aurora, Colo. (Smoky Hill) native, set a new CU school record in the 5,000-meter run on Sunday night at Stanford University at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. Vaughn ran a time of 13 minutes and 18.46 seconds to surpass Jorge Torres' previous record of 13:24.56, set on May 3, 2003, also at Stanford. Vaughn placed second in the race and coincidently ran against Torres who finished seventh (13:30.09).
The mark is the fastest time by a collegian this season and should put Vaughn in a good position for the U.S. Olympic Trials this June and July as it moves him up from a 13:30.12 mark, his previous personal best that he ran in 2007. Both times are U.S. Olympic Trials 'A' standards.
CU MEN'S GOLF
The University of Colorado men's golf team earned its third straight invitation to the NCAA Championships that will be played at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course from May 15-17. The Buffs, who won the Robert Keppler Intercollegiate at the same course on April 13, Buffaloes are one of 27 teams that will participate in the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio.
The top 10 schools from each of the three regionals advancing to the NCAA Championship Finals in West Lafayette, Ind., May 28-31.
CU is seeded No. 21 in the region and is one of eight Big 12 Conference schools advancing to the postseason.
All five Buffaloes who played in the OSU meet in April will represent Colorado in the NCAA's. CU placed three in the top 13 and all five in the top 34 in the 75-man field. Sophomore Luke Symons (tie-2nd), senior Michael Baird (tie-10th), junior Derek Tolan (tie-13th), senior Jim Grady (tie-21st) and freshman Michael Imperato (tie-34th) played well on the Scarlet Course and now get another crack at it.
Schools had to own a winning record overall, and Colorado was 91-57-1 against all other Division I opponents in 2007-08; once meeting that qualification, other factors were considering in selecting then seeding teams. In this week's national rankings, the Buffaloes are currently No. 64 by GolfStat and No. 67 by Golfweek.
