M arla Schultz auditioned for a role on an HBO movie and she was told she wasn't "floozy" enough.
"I was too sparkly, I was told," she laughs.
Oh well, no HBO. Schultz has no need to worry. She has already conquered FX, E! Entertainment Television, Oxygen, NBC, The Game Show Network, The Hollywood 411 on the TV Guide Network, FOX News Red eye and The Jim Breuer Show. But, despite acting, commentary and comedy gigs on television, she still loves doing standup. And she sure loves Denver.
"I think Denver is probably one of the best cities in the entire world," she said at Comedy Works her last trip. "Oh my god, the hottest guys. You guys have the best pot I've ever smoked in my life. But I do have to say one thing, I don't get this altitude thing. First of all, how do you guys have sex without getting winded? I'd be like, hang on ... no, I'm really into you, I just need oxygen, OK? Really, I don't know how you guys have a good time. I had one cocktail and I'm like flat on my ass."
Recently, Schultz had a guest role on FX's "Dirt," the self-proclaimed "celebri-cedural drama featuring Hollywood scandals ripped from the headlines," starring Courteney Cox. If FX picks up the drama for another season next fall (let's hope), Schultz was told her role would be a recurring one.
"It was just really, really cool," Schultz said. "Courtney Cox was a goddess - and somebody of that status, you don't expect to be so nice -- and she was just so approachable and so friendly."
Schultz's debut on a television drama "exceeded her wildest expectations." Seems like she exceeded Cox's expectations as well.
"(Courteney Cox) said 'Oh my god it was my pleasure, I loved having you on the show, I definitely want you back.' So I was like 'Woo hoo!'" she says. "I mean, she didn't have to say that. She was just really nice."
Speaking of the fairer sex, Schultz, a native Long Islander, acquires much of her comedy from her Italian New Yawker girlfriends. "New Yorkers, we're so loud. I grew up with this pack of prima donnas - the Italian girls. It was Rory, TonyAnn, Titla Sue, Big Fran and Little Fran. Big Fran and Little Fran, they were the same height, but Big Fran's hair was just 5 inches higher," she said in a comedy routine. "So before I left on tour with Chelsea (Handler) they threw me a little going away party. My friend Rory comes truckin' in, she's got those 'come fuck me pumps on,' little mini-skirt that barely covers her bippi - that's a VAGINA," she yells out to a guy in the front row. "And a full-length fur she's has over her shoulder. Right when we walk into the restaurant, we get ambushed by one of those anti-fur freaks. And they get right in her face and say 'Nice dead animal.' You don't want to piss off an Italian girl from Long Island ... and my friend Rory was like ... 'Excuse me, skank? Are you fuckin' twalkin' to me?'"
Schultz misses New York, but since she is making such headway in California, she says she is going to stay there. But, it doesn't keep her from headlining comedy clubs across the country. After her time in Denver this weekend, headlining and also opening for quirky funnyman Harlan Williams, she heads back to New York to open for the jaw-dropping Gilbert Gottfried.
But first, we can and should enjoy her in Denver.
"Denver truly is my favorite comedy town because Comedy Works was the first club to give me a headlining spot when I was touring with Chelsea (Handler)," she says. "It's my favorite, favorite town to do stand up in and I'm very excited to be back. Comedy Works is known as one of the best clubs in the comedy world."
Catch Schultz this Friday and Saturday at Comedy Works in Denver, where she will open for Harland Williams, or see her headline at the club on Sunday.
Even though she is making a venture into acting, when asked if she would ever quit standup, she simply replied: "Oh, never!" Good, because this is one act that shouldn't be missed.
