Boulder police are looking for a man and woman who they suspect were involved in a baseball-bat assault this week that left a 34-year-old woman with serious head injuries, including a brain contusion, facial fracture, deep laceration and possible nerve damage.

The victim, whose name hasn't been released, told officers she was hit with a bat in a parking lot outside her apartment near 34th Street and O’Neal Parkway at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday after confronting a group of people, said police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.

"She saw a group in front of her apartment talking to people about selling a car, and she became frustrated," Huntley said.

Because there had been several recent break-ins near the building, Huntley said the woman decided to ask the group, "Do you live here?" and she said, "Don't sell your car here."

"It appears the group took her questions in a different context," Huntley said. "One of them responded, 'I'm an American, and I live here.'"

The victim told investigators she wasn't referring to anyone's ethnicity or legal status in the United States. According to police, she was trying to be more aware of people in her neighborhood because of recent break-ins.

Huntley said, "There might have been some confusion about her intention."

A verbal exchange followed, and Huntley said the injured woman told officers that a male and female stepped forward.

"The last thing she remembers is being hit in the head with a baseball bat," Huntley said.

The suspects left in a car, possibly a white Cadillac Seville, and several people stayed behind to make sure the woman could walk and was OK, Huntley said. She staggered to a passerby and told him what had happened.

The woman then made it to her apartment and her roommate took her to Boulder Community Hospital, where she was treated for serious head injuries, Huntley said.

Boulder police have released a sketch of the female suspect, who's described as a Hispanic woman in her 20s, about 5-foot-5-inches tall and 120 pounds, according to police. She had dark, wavy hair with short bangs, long eyelashes and a gap between her right front teeth. She was last seen wearing a white shirt and long-sleeved hooded sweatshirt.

There isn't a sketch of the male suspect, but he's described as a Hispanic, about 5-feet-8-inches tall, with a heavy build and possibly a mustache. He was last seen wearing a sleeveless shirt.

Anyone with information can call detective Kristi Peterson at 303-441-3330 or Boulder County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

If arrested, the suspects could face first-degree assault charges.
