S chool's out for summer. Instead of just lazing around all summer, playing video games, talking on the phone and populating the mall, get those creative pants on express yourself.

The Studio Project, a teen program at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA), announces "Wreck-Creation: A Midsummer Night's Happening," this Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. "Wreck-Creation" is a culmination of a year of teen-focused programs at BMoCA. BMoCA's interns have created their biggest teen-only event to date. "Wreck-Creation" offers more opportunities than ever for high school students to engage in the arts, hang out with a diverse group of Boulder teens, and be encouraged to freely express themselves in a creative and safe space. Finally, Boulder teens can enjoy an official summer kick-off event of their very own.

In the style of 60's art happenings, "Wreck-Creation" promises to offer a plethora of energetic activity. Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF) will screen film shorts in the museum's Black Box Theater, while local high school bands play music in the galleries.

Just outside the museum, Urban Allyance hosts live graffiti art making, alongside snow cone making. BMoCA's new exhibits are the inspiration for plenty of art-based activities like duct-tape wallets and accessories, add to a 3-D punk duckie mural, or just hang out in a cool environment with other teens.

In the fashion of previous events hosted by The Studio Project, the museum's Youth Art Advisory Interns have worked tirelessly to create an event unique in its scope and entirely teen-centric in its focus.

The interns, who are completing their school-year long internship this month, seek creative ways to engage local teens, often through collaboration with other Boulder organizations. The BIFF has participated in previous teen film nights at the museum, where teens talked with filmmakers about their craft and careers.

During "Wreck-Creation," teens will again have the chance to talk with local filmmakers, between BIFF film short screenings. BMoCA's new collaborating partner, Urban Allyance, connects street-inspired art forms like graffiti and underground hip hop to a broader audience with messages of positivity, sustainable living and spiritual growth. Graffiti, a popular art form among teens, will be showcased outside the museum, with Urban Allyance on hand to teach the basics. YMCA of Boulder Valley, annual host of the Teen Space during the Boulder Creek Festival -which is this weekend -- will also be involved throughout the evening.

The mission of The Studio Project is to mount teen-focused events to facilitate dialogue about art, art making and social issues as they affect young people. With input from local teens, BMoCA engages young people in a dynamic investigation of contemporary art and topics important in teenage life -- like technology, film and creative expression.

BMoCA is located at 1750 13th St. in Boulder. Summer museum hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 3 p.m.; closed Monday. Regular museum admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and free to museum members and children under 12. BmoCA offers free admission on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from April through September during the Boulder County Farmers' Market.
