OUR TAKE: Give the people what they want

Friday, May 23, 2008

Believe it or not, the Colorado Daily is nearly 116 years old. That's a lot of candles, especially when you consider that rumors of the impending death of the newspaper industry have been floating around ever since the first blogger geekpopped up on the Internet like a pimple on the face of, well, a blogger geek.

It hasn't always been easy being in this business, but it's a labor of love for most of the people that put out The Colorado Daily, The Camera and all the other newspapers that are still carrying on in the face of lagging ad revenues. We had it easy for a long time. Now we don't. That's just business.

But sagging revenues and competition from the World Wide Web are no excuse for stagnation. If you got into the newspaper business to provide people with the best possible information about the people and things that shape their lives, then having to work hard to do that shouldn't be a deal-breaker. We don't get up in the morning worrying about how to make The Colorado Daily more profitable. Those concerns usually hit us sometime after lunch. But seriously...

What we really want to be is interesting. That can mean a lot of different things depending on who you ask, but what we're shooting for is eye-catching presentation, easy-to-navigate sections and fun, interesting stories.

Obviously, it's impossible to be all things to all people. We'd love to be the paper that everyone in Boulder reads, but realistically that's never going to happen. The things that are of interest to an 18-year-old CU freshman aren't even on the radar of your typical University Hill homeowner with a mortgage, car payments and kids to support. We'd love to have those people as readers of course, but we simply can't afford to neglect our core audience (the 18-34 crowd) to cater to older folks.

Still, we're open to suggestions. Which brings us to the reader survey currently running in our newspaper. If you have the time, please fill it out and return it to us. Be brutally honest about what you like, what you don't like, what you read, what you'd like to read more of and your overall opinion of the Colorado Daily. Remember, we're doing this because we the paper to be fresh and appealing.

On another note, the Colorado Daily is going through some other changes. For the second time in a decade, we're moving. This time it's a matter of convenience. Our parent company, Scripps, owns both the Camera and The Colorado Daily. The Camera has its own building right off the Pearl Street Mall, in the heart of downtown Boulder. It's a great location and they've got quite a bit of empty space on the Walnut Street side -perfect for the Colorado Daily. We'll have our own address, our own entrance and our own newsroom. In essence, it will be the same newspaper it's been all along, just nestled a little closer to its big sister.

So please let us know what you think of our newspaper even if you hate it - especially if you hate it. All we ask is that you try to be constructive. Do that and we'll try to keep giving CU and Boulder the best possible news we can, just like we've been doing for 115 years and counting.
