Walkin’ in a Winter Wonder-Slam

Relient K Kicks off the holidays with tour

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Tis the season to rock out.

The first winter holiday tour to hit town is the Winter Wonder-Slam Tour. The road show features Relient K, TobyMac and Family Force 5. The modern music party pays a visit to the Denver Coliseum Friday.

Relient K has been touring behind its 2007 CD Five Score and Seven Years Ago. The indie rock band is fresh off its “Uncle Fest Tour.”

“We were on the Warped Tour the last time we played Denver,” Relient K guitarist Matt Thiessen said. “We put out a double EP in July – Nashville Tennis and The Bird and the Bee Sides to tide our fans over.

“In January we’re going to start writing new songs. It’s too hard to write on the road with 11 guys crammed into a bus.”

The Winter Wonder-Slam Tour should keep Relient K fans going until 2009.

“TobyMac started the annual tour, but it’s the first time we’ve done it,” Thiessen said. “Toby was the one who signed us to a record deal and we thought this would be a fun to do.”

Relient K’s MySpace site is filled with Christmas-friendly tunes, so the band will be throwing several holiday favorites into its Denver music set.

“We only have 40 minutes to play, but we’re planning on playing three Christmas songs,” Thiessen revealed. “There are a lot of Christmas songs we like, so it’s going to be difficult to make the decision what to play.”

Keeping in the holiday spirit, Relient K is also promoting its annual Christmas album.

“We’ve put out a Christmas record for the past four or five years,” Thiessen explained. “We keep adding more songs to it. It’s fun to be one of those bands that has a Christmas album.

“My sister loves to listen to Christmas music 365 days a year, so this year she convinced us to add ‘Holy Night.’”

Relient K is already looking to 2009. The band will be touring Australia and Japan in the new year.
