Sarah Silverman: Always done for laughs

Sarah Silverman is an equal-opportunity poker.
She's raised the ire of many by making jokes involving the Holocaust and rape. But Silverman isn't above telling it as she sees it about herself.
"I always think of myself as being socially political," she says during a phone interview. "But, mostly, I consider myself a 'poop' joke idiot."
She tries to combine the two on "The Sarah Silverman Program," recently back for its third season on Comedy Central. While the comedy relishes its juvenile sight gags, it has also touched on hot-button subjects.
"Silverman" has worked in abortion, religion, same-sex relationships, marijuana use and animal abuse into stories. The season opener followed two characters going about their day in a marijuana-induced fog.
Whatever the topic, it's done always for laughs.
"We're not 'The West Wing,'" she deadpans.
Silverman also doesn't want to undersell her series.
In the same season opener, Sarah notices how corporate America works. While in the grocery store, she sees a product that gives its customers diarrhea and another product to clear it up, both made by the same company.
"I just read a review in Entertainment Weekly, and it said (the first episode) was all about poop jokes and such. To me, it was more than that," Silverman says.
"I know it was about a diarrhea medical company ... but to me, it's about corporate America that creates a problem and markets a solution."
