The Felice Brothers have come a long way from performing in the New York City subway system.

The band was just nominated for Britain's Uncut Music Awards, and the bros are sharing the U.K. nominations with Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, Drive-By Truckers and the Raconteurs.

That's pretty good, considering the Felice Brothers' debut gigs took place at their dad's BBQ parties.

That down-home feeling, polished off with gritty vocals and rough-edged melodies, make this band stand out from the pack.

The Felice Brothers even give their quirky songs titles that are worthy of a Tim Burton movie. Try "Murder By Mistletoe" or "Don't Wake the Scarecrow" on for size -- you'll become an instant fan.

"We come from this big musical family," accordionist James Felice said. "We'd always play music for fun and at BBQs. We were influenced by American roots music of the late 1800s and early 1900s -- it was earthy, raw and it spoke to us.

"That kind of music was honest and it wasn't commercial."

The Felice Brothers moved to New York City as a "rite of passage." The brothers started playing in the subway stations, farmers' markets and clubs to get their music out.

"Playing in the subways was great -- you'd get all this reverberation off the walls," Felice said. "Lots of people come through there and we'd make $200 an hour."

The Felice Brothers started getting bigger gigs in the city, released several records and toured with Bright Eyes and Drive-By Truckers.

The family band released its self-titled CD -- which they recorded in a chicken coop -- on Team Love Records in 2008.

"I guess there's starting to be a buzz on the band," Felice said. "We've been getting bigger gigs across the country -- we do 200 dates a year. It's all starting to add up."

The Felice Brothers hit the Fox Theatre on Tuesday, and this show is tailor-made for party-hungry locals.

"Our live show has a lot of people dancing, hollering and drinking," Felice said. "This is the last night of this tour, so it's going to be really fun at the Fox."

Amie Miriello and more

Amie Miriello's another name you're going to be hearing a lot about. The artist's fresh pop, rock and folk songs have been earning her lots of ink in the media.

Miriello was hand-picked by Teresa LaBarbera Whites -- the woman who mentored Beyonce's career -- and now the singer-songwriter's opening shows for artists such as Gavin DeGraw and Bob Schneider.

"I started my career playing with the pop-rock band Dirtie Blonde and we actually had a hit single," Miriello said. "I always liked artists like Tori Amos and I wanted to become more of a singer-songwriter."

Miriello opens up for the rocking Schneider at the Fox tonight.

Flobots go platinum

Way to go Flobots!

The local band just earned a prestigious platinum award because 1 million digital downloads were logged in for the group's debut single "Handlebars."

The Flobots are now busy opening shows for rapper Matisyahu.

Not to worry, the band will be back in Denver to headline the Gothic Theatre on New Year's Eve.
