Boulder police arrested a man they say broke into a spa's rooftop hot tub area to celebrate his birthday and then had to be helped down with a fire department ladder truck.

Police responded at 2:32 a.m. this morning after an alarm went off at Colorado Massage Center, which is located on the second floor of a building at 3109 28th St., according to police spokeswoman Kim Kobel. Officers on scene were able to climb onto the roof and saw that the lid of a hot tub in a fenced-off area had been removed.

Police then say a man later identified as Michel John Blodgett, 36, came out of a dressing area and told police, "It's just me. Am I in trouble?"

Kobel said Blodgett told officers it was his birthday and that some people at the nearby Outback Saloon, where he was drinking that night, told him about the hot tub and said he should go. Records indicate Blodgett's birthday was Thursday.

Blodgett said he used boxes to get into the hot tub area, and officers noted he would have had to climb over a "No Trespassing" sign to get into the area, according to Kobel.

Officers could not access the rooftop area by stairs, so a Boulder Fire Department ladder truck was called to the scene to help Blodgett get down from the roof.

Blodgett was then arrested and issued a municipal citation for trespassing before being released.

He could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.
