A bicyclist was seriously injured this morning after he failed to activate a signal at a lighted crosswalk near 28th and Spruce streets and was hit by a car, Boulder police said.
At around 9:34 a.m., Alfred Christiansen III, 23, was biking north on the west sidewalk of 28th Street when he turned east on a lighted crosswalk near Spruce Street, according to Boulder police spokeswoman Kim Kobel.
Kobel said Christansen did not activate the crossing signal.
As he was crossing, an SUV in the near southbound lane stopped, but Christiansen was hit by 2005 Chrysler Sebring driven by Richard Chrappa, 73, in the center lane.
Chrappa told police he did not see Christiansen because of the SUV, according to Kobel.
Christiansen was taken to Boulder Community Hospital with broken bones.
Chrappa was issued a ticket for careless driving resulting in injury. Kobel said Christiansen may also be cited for failure to obey a traffic control signal since he did not activate the crosswalk signal before crossing.
