It's no secret Boulderites are wicked into starting their own badass projects and companies. Some of them turn to venture capitalists or angel investors to get them going, others raise their own money by bootstrapping, and even more harness the power of crowdfunding to get things off the ground. Kickstarter is one of the most well-known crowdfunding platforms, although others, like indiegogo — which recently hosted New Era Colorado's massively successful Campaign for Local Power — definitely draw some clout as well.
One of the awesome features of Kickstarter is the ability to search projects by location, so you can check out all the local projects happening at any given time. If you're in a giving mood, I've saved you the trouble of the search and picked the three nerdiest Boulder-based projects that are running right now so you can support local creative nerds.
Luna's Wandering Stars is a video game based on planetary physics. Yes, you can be a gamer and study for next week's exam all at the same time. You'll also be able to create your own levels and share them online with other players. The team, which includes CU alumni, has done a great job of keeping their Kickstarter page current with updates to the game's design.
Boulder startup darling Ubooly has turned to Kickstarter for a second round of funding to launch their next line of products. Ubooly is a toy/app combo product that works with iPhones and the iPod touch. The app is loaded with countless features that encourage kids to engage with the toy, from telling stories to being a helper to kids learning how to brush their teeth. The new version of Ubooly, which they're hoping to fund with this project, will have even more features, including Android support and multiple language options. The Ubooly team has worked with educators to create lessons, turning it into an educational toy as well. An adorable, techy toy that's helping to grow future nerds? Definitely worth a backing.
One of Boulder's newest breweries, Sanitas Brewing, has a little something for all you beer nerds out there. They're raising money for a new coolship and barrels in order to make and store an exclusively Colorado beer. From their Kickstarter page: "coolship is a wide pan or tub used to naturally cool wort (pre-fermented beer) and expose the sugary fluid to wild yeast and bacteria." Y'all know science isn't exactly my jam, but I do like math, and I know local + beer = fantastic.
