A Boulder District judge today sided with prosecutors and sentenced Bradley Lee Eckert to 36 years in jail for setting his girlfriend's duplex on fire, nearly killing two people.

A jury in September found Eckert, 49, guilty of two counts of attempted murder and two counts of first-degree arson, charges that stem from the May 2008 crime.

"He did a very callous act," said Prosecutor Michael Foote. "He didn't care about the consequences."

Eckert's on-again, off-again girlfriend, Laurie Roth, was not at her Lefthand Canyon home at the time.

But, Roth's neighbors, Jerome and Erin Bishop, barely escaped the adjoining unit after a neighbor banged on their door and eventually woke them up.
