A fedora-wearing gunman opened fire outside a Jefferson County middle school Tuesday afternoon, wounding two students in a bizarre burst of violence before a math teacher tackled him.

The two wounded students were both expected to survive after the shooting, which occurred just after 3 p.m. outside Deer Creek Middle School, 9201 W. Columbine Drive. They were identified as Reagan Webber and Matt Thieu, both eighth-graders at Deer Creek.

Both were rushed to Littleton Adventist Hospital, where Webber was listed in good condition and Thieu in fair condition Tuesday evening, according to hospital spokeswoman Maurine Taylor.

A 32-year-old man, held down by the math teacher, two other teachers and then other witnesses until law officers arrived, was being questioned late Tuesday night and is expected to face two counts of attempted murder, said Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

The alleged gunman, Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood, was using a "high-powered rifle,” said Mark Techmeyer, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

Eastwood has prior arrests for menacing and domestic violence, according to computerized court records.

It was not clear why he went to the school or whether he fired
